Ramadan Greetings from the Islamic Society of North America
On behalf of the Islamic Society of North America we wish Muslims in North America and elsewhere a prosperous Ramadan. We ask that you use this month filled with Allah’s infinite mercy and compassion to ponder the plight of those less fortunate; and that you alleviate their suffering through your generous contributions to worthy charities in this country.

Fiqh Council Decision on Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
On the basis of this new position the dates of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr for this year are as follows:
1st of Ramadan will be on Thursday, September 13, 2007
1st of Shawwal will be on Saturday, October 13, 2007
The Fiqh Council of North America in its meeting in Herndon, Virginia on July 31-August 1, 2007 noted with satisfaction the recent Fatwa of its counterpart in Europe “the European Council for Fatwa and Research” related to the permissibility of the use of calculation method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal.
The position of ECFR is similar to that which FCNA adopted last year on June 10, 2006, with a minor difference. FCNA adopted the position that the conjunction should occur before noon at Greenwich time. whereas ECFR adopted Makkah al-Mukarram as a conventional point, and took the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah, and the moon must set after sunset in Makkah.
FCNA, after careful discussion has revised its position and has adopted the Fatwa of ECFR. This revised position however, will change only a few dates in the Fiqh Council’s Five year calendar; but it will bring greater harmony and unity among the Muslims communities in the West.

A Call for Understanding and Harmony
For the sake of unity and to avoid unnecessary confusion the Fiqh Council encourages all Muslims throughout North America to consider adopting the new methodology for determining the beginning and end of Ramadan. As with all changes, it will take time for people to understand and appreciate the new method. Meanwhile, the Council has neither the intent nor the authority to force its decision on any individual Muslim or community; it does ask however, that its opinions as appear on its web page be carefully studied.
Not everyone will accept this decision, and that is their right. We do ask however, that Muslims respect all opinions and that they avoid unnecessary disputes and discussion. We remain convinced that in time the vast majority of Muslims will see the new methodology as a more objective and accurate standard for uniting us during our sacred times.

Ramadan Campaign
We thank Allah (swt) for giving us another occasion to witness this blessed time in our life. During the month of Ramadan, it is important to realize that we, as Muslims, should take this opportunity to give as much as possible. Ibn `Abaas said, "The Prophet (saw) was the most charitable amongst people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when the angel Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month." (al-Bukhaaree).
During this month we should donate and give zakat more then any other time of the year. ISNA has provided a worksheet which calculates the amount of zakat. To download the worksheet click here
