LONDON, Thursday - Ugandan president Idi Amin sent a message demanding an invitation to Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee celebrations and a Commonwealth meeting in 1977, newly-released documents have shown.

He threatened to show up to “give some advice on the current chaotic economic situation in Great Britain”.

Britain, which turned to the International Monetary Fund for help after a 1976 sterling crisis, held lavish celebrations to mark the Queen’s 25 years on the throne. A Commonwealth summit was taking place around the same time and Amin made clear his intention to be at both.

In a message to Commonwealth secretary-general Sir Shridath Ramphal in February 1977, Amin wrote: “I wish to inform you that I shall personally attend the meeting and also be present at all the functions organised for the celebrations of the silver jubilee of Her Majesty.”

Amin said he would show up in London “accompanied by a delegation of 250 people including dancers of the heartbeat of Africa” and expected to be received “with the highest honour”.

“I shall point out frankly the weakness of the British government and give advice on the current chaotic economic situation, which has been brought about by the fact that the British economy is now controlled by British Asians and Zionists.”
