Inspiring King Remembered
Raid Qusti, Arab News

RIYADH, 7 May 2008 - The legacy of a king, a leader, a revolutionist, an inspirer, and - most of all - a freedom fighter for Palestine was remembered last night in Riyadh.

Giving tribute to one of Islam's and the Kingdom's greatest leaders, Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman, chairman of the King Abdul Aziz Museum, inaugurated a three-day seminar and scientific exhibition on the history of King Faisal.

"I saw in him a true believer, an intelligent politician... He listened beyond patience and was silent and understanding. When he spoke, he decided. And when he decided he was firm... He respected himself so people respected him. He ruled himself, so he ruled the people... He was a staunch supporter of Islamic causes," said Prince Salman.

He added that the late king, before he was martyred, was asked how he saw Saudi Arabia after the year 2000. "I see it as a beacon of light for all humanity," he replied.

Last night's opening ceremony was also attended by the late king's surviving sons - Prince Muhammad Al-Faisal, Makkah Gov. Khaled Al-Faisal, Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal, Prince Bandar Al-Faisal and former Ambassador to Washington and London Prince Turki Al-Faisal.

Speakers at the event mentioned how King Faisal would always be remembered for his wisdom and vision to unite the Islamic world. "His dream was that all Muslims would be able to pray in the Aqsa Mosque," said Prince Khaled.

A video of the late king speaking at the White House in 1973 was also shown at yesterday's opening event. "Our tensions are because of the suffering of our (Palestinian) people, the suffering of our (Muslim) nations," the king said boldly, while US President Richard Nixon looked on.

In Saudi Arabia, King Faisal will be remembered as the person who issued a law banning slavery and paved the way for female education.

Starting early today, local and international speakers will discuss the king's legacy in over a dozen sessions. The final session will be attended by Prince Khaled and several government officials who held important positions during King Faisal's reign.

In a previous interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, chairman of the King Faisal Center for Research & Islamic Studies (KFCRIS), said prominent Saudi and foreign speakers would be addressing the three-day seminar.

"This seminar is significant as it focuses on a person who lived during the Kingdom's unification by King Abdul Aziz... King Faisal also made considerable contributions to the Kingdom's development and in taking the country to a new phase of progress and prosperity," he said.

On the sidelines of the event, an exhibition entitled "Witness & Martyr" is also being held.

Doctors train to reduce cases referred abroad

By Frank Mugabi
and Richard Adrama

The Government and health ministry have started specialised training for doctors in the fields of surgery, medicine, anesthesia and nursing. The measure, according to health state minister Emmanuel Otaala, is ensure that most of acute cases recommended for treatment abroad can be managed within the country.

Otaala said many patients were being referred abroad because the country lacked specialised surgical and medical services.

The minister was on Friday speaking at the closing ceremony of the scientific conference of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda in Arua.

“I am glad the association of surgeons is assisting the ministry to professionalise the health workforce,” Otaala said, adding the health ministry would continue supporting the association.

The week-long event saw 96 surgeons conduct operations in Arua Hospital.

The association president, Dr. Rosemary Nassanga, said only 814 operations of the 2,805 cases were carried because of limited funds and logistics.

Ugandan presidential aide jailed in Britain
Monday, 22nd September, 2008 E-mail article Print article

LONDON - A Ugandan government official was jailed for 12 months yesterday in a landmark corruption case that centred on the security measures put in place for a Commonwealth summit attended by Gordon Brown and the Queen.

Ananias Tumukunde, a senior science and technology adviser to President Yoweri Museveni, pleaded guilty to accepting more than £50,000 in bribes from a UK-based company that trained the Ugandan army on how to counteract chemical and biological threats in advance of last year’s summit.

The court was told that Tumukunde approached Niels Tobiasen, managing director of CBRN Team Ltd, a Wiltshire-based security specialist, for what he called “local tax” payments after CBRN signed a £210,000 contract to provide training and equipment in advance of the Commonwealth meeting in Kampala last November.

Five payments, totalling about £83,000, were transferred to bank accounts controlled by Tumukunde and Rusoke Tagaswire, a Ugandan army officer, who is still at large. Tobiasen, a Danish national, is due to be sentenced later this week at the same court.

Assassin’ faces life in prison
Thursday, 9th October, 2008 E-mail article Print article

By Nuliat Nakiwala

A SOLDIER accused of attempting to assassinate the President should serve life imprisonment, a military prosecutor demanded on Tuesday.

Pte. Godfrey Musisi, who was serving with the Internal Security Organisation, is accused of beating the inner ring of the Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) while armed with a star Yugoslav pistol loaded with eight bullets.

This was at the former International Conference Centre in Kampala where President Museveni and other heads of state were attending a COMESA conference on June 6, 2004, prosecutor Lt. David Aboga said.

The act was tantamount to indiscipline and disobedience because Musisi had been strictly briefed on what to do, Aboga said.

“The prosecution has proved this offence and prays that this court finds the accused guilty and sentence him to life imprisonment.”

The first witness, the then Internal Security Organisation chief, Brig. Elly Kayanja, said he attended a meeting of all security agencies on May 26, 2004.

The meeting, he said, resolved that all persons guarding the President, except the PGB, should not carry guns. “The resolution bound everybody,” Kayanja said. “His role was to protect the presidents.”

Kayanja argued that Musisi had no excuse to carry the gun because the instructions were written and he had been briefed.

Other witnesses, including Lt. Herbert Muramagi, corroborated Kayanja’s testimony.

Muramagi said other security officers were ordered to deposit their guns with the armoury boss.

In his defence, Musisi said when he was arrested, the presidents were not present.

The hearing was adjourned to next week when Musisi is expected to further defend himself.

“Musisi, you are further remanded back to Luzira Prison where you have been till then,” Mulumba said.
